Background of the Study

In today’s fast-paced business environment, the selection of vendors is a critical component of procurement strategy. Vendor selection is not merely about choosing a supplier who offers the lowest price, but involves a detailed assessment of a vendor's reliability, quality, financial stability, and ability to meet the organization’s strategic goals (Yang et al., 2023). In the telecommunications industry, where MTN Nigeria operates, effective procurement practices are paramount to ensuring the uninterrupted supply of materials and services necessary for seamless operations. This is especially important in regions like Borno State, where supply chains face unique challenges due to security concerns and infrastructural limitations.

MTN Nigeria, a major player in the telecommunications sector, faces the challenge of maintaining procurement efficiency in an environment characterized by logistic difficulties, regulatory complexities, and local vendor limitations. To address these challenges, MTN Nigeria employs a variety of vendor selection criteria, aiming to ensure that only the most suitable suppliers are chosen for their procurement needs. These criteria typically include vendor financial stability, delivery capabilities, quality assurance, and adherence to ethical practices (Amin & Younis, 2024). The decision-making process surrounding vendor selection thus directly impacts the company’s procurement efficiency, cost management, and service delivery to its customers.

The focus of this study is to explore how MTN Nigeria’s vendor selection criteria affect procurement efficiency in Borno State, evaluating both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of vendor selection. By focusing on a region with unique operational challenges, this research aims to offer insights into the best practices for vendor selection in a difficult procurement environment, thereby contributing to the broader field of procurement management in Nigeria.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of vendor selection in ensuring procurement efficiency, there is a notable gap in understanding how the criteria used by MTN Nigeria in Borno State impact overall procurement performance. As procurement becomes increasingly complex due to logistical challenges and security concerns in Borno State, MTN Nigeria may face inefficiencies, delayed deliveries, and inflated costs if the vendor selection process is not optimized. The problem arises from the lack of empirical evidence on the relationship between vendor selection criteria and procurement efficiency within this particular context, leaving a gap in knowledge that hinders the development of more effective procurement strategies.

The inability to clearly identify and evaluate the most effective vendor selection criteria could lead to delays in procurement processes, cost overruns, and subpar service delivery, all of which negatively impact MTN Nigeria’s ability to maintain its competitive advantage. Therefore, this research aims to assess the impact of vendor selection criteria on procurement efficiency in MTN Nigeria, specifically focusing on how these criteria influence operational performance in Borno State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To investigate the vendor selection criteria employed by MTN Nigeria in Borno State.

2. To examine the impact of these vendor selection criteria on procurement efficiency at MTN Nigeria.

3. To propose recommendations for improving vendor selection processes to enhance procurement efficiency in MTN Nigeria.

Research Questions

1. What are the vendor selection criteria employed by MTN Nigeria in Borno State?

2. How do these vendor selection criteria impact procurement efficiency at MTN Nigeria?

3. What improvements can be made to the vendor selection process to enhance procurement efficiency in MTN Nigeria?

Research Hypotheses

1. There is no significant relationship between vendor selection criteria and procurement efficiency in MTN Nigeria, Borno State.

2. The vendor selection process does not significantly impact the cost-effectiveness of procurement operations at MTN Nigeria.

3. The vendor selection criteria have no significant influence on the timeliness and quality of procurement in MTN Nigeria.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on MTN Nigeria’s procurement operations in Borno State, particularly the vendor selection criteria and their impact on procurement efficiency. Data will be collected from procurement departments, vendor evaluations, and relevant personnel. However, the study’s limitations include the potential for incomplete or biased data due to the sensitive nature of procurement operations and the security challenges in Borno State, which may limit access to some suppliers and stakeholders.
